French style kitchens need to work and enhance the space. Rather than applying a formula, Jean-Christophe designs a kitchen that best matches the house and how the family likes to come together in it. The ideal French kitchen makes it easy to prepare food, store it and enjoy it.
Jean-Christophe combines his knowledge of what creates that unique French casual elegance with the personality, needs and wishes of each customer.
“There is nothing that exudes the French provincial style more than the French provincial kitchen“
At Christophe Living, we like to approach French provincial kitchens from a total design approach. This means we look at the wall colours, the floor material, the colour, lighting, window treatment and wall decorations. Looking at all these elements means that we can make sure that everything in the kitchen works together beautifully to create that French wow feeling!
There are many different style of French provincial kitchen and at Christophe Living you can discover which style suits your home best.
The French farmhouse kitchen
This style is sometimes made out of timber with a rustic finish or an antique painted finish. Often with a dresser or plate rack to display colourful tableware, the French farmhouse style also tends to have some free-standing furniture to give a more authentic country look and feel, rather than having everything ‘built-in’.
The French provincial kitchen
In the country villas, small town houses and country homes throughout France we find kitchens that are often large and very functional yet still embodying the qualities of the French classical style.
Often these kitchens have Louis shaped doors, antique white finishes, some carved corbels and exude the quintessential French provincial relaxed, elegant and romantic feel.
The French classic kitchen
With its refined and classical lines this is the kind of kitchen we could find in a chic Parisian apartment or a grand country home in the south of France.
This style of French classical kitchen is designed with details such as the ones often found on Louis XVI furniture. Square panels might be found with little rosettes in corners. Reeded columns, sober carvings and some neo-classicel ornaments may adorn the cabinets.
Taking the French provincial classical elements and pride a step further, the finish of the furniture and cabinetry may be antique white or have trims in soft French grey or taupe.
We have produced a documentary called “Decorating in the French Provincial style in Australia” which we recommend our prospective customers to watch on dvd so that they can get a sense of what they like amongst all the different French styles and examples.
How do we design French provincial kitchens?
We come and visit you home or if it’s still being built we go over the house plans carefully. We like to ask lots of questions as to how you like to use the kitchen, how you cook, store food and entertain. That way we can make sure that all of the elements designs match you and your family needs.
The secret of a good French kitchen design is in integrating all the different elements that make up a kitchen, not just focusing on the cabinets. Here are some of the elements that we consider in designing a kitchen that has the charm, unique relaxed French elegance and that special romantic quality.
The French kitchen floor
In many ways the floor is the canvas onto which sits all the kitchen cabinets and as such we make sure that the finish on the cabinets is both complemented and enhanced by the floor We consider the texture, colour, ease of maintenance, budget and French authenticity of the floor when designing it. Depending on the style and requirements we look at French tiles, terracotta, travertine, timber or other stone.
Colour scheme of the French kitchen
We carefully consider how the colours of the walls, floor, kitchen finish and bench top will work together harmoniously. Each part affects the other and we are passionate about the whole kitchen giving that wow effect. We also like to make sure that the kitchen design has a timeless quality that improves rather than ages with time.
The French Provencal colour palette is very much inspired from the colours found in the Mediterranean region. From the ochres of the ground, the produce, the lavender and other herbs, these colours are made all the more vivid by the dry sunny climate and soft light bathes the region.
The French kitchen cabinets
We tend to look at the kitchen cabinets from the point of view of traditional craftsmen rather that quickly assembled boxes. Our fine cabinet making workshop can use a variety of kitchen making techniques. Whichever one is chosen we like to make sure the components, production, assemblage and hardware are of the highest quality.
For customers who prefer modern materials we use the best available and the latest European hardware. We also provide the unique service of solid timber kitchens, hand carved motifs and French hardware.
The unique French provincial painted finishes for kitchens
One of our specialties is the hand brushed painted finish on our kitchens, we offer a wide variety of painted finishes, from antique white to duo tone and rub-through effects.
We protect all kitchen surfaces with an easy to care, safe and eco friendly clear coating. This allows for ease of maintenance and the long-term protection of your kitchen investment.
One of the most popular designs for a French kitchen is the antique white finish and we have developed a number of different hand-brushed finishes in a variety of shades. We also use bolder colours with antique patina for that authentic provincial feel. Another design element is the use of contrasting colour trims on mouldings and carving.
French kitchen benchtops
There are so many options for the French provincial kitchen benchtop, from the traditional Carrara marble to French tiles, stone or timber finishes. We make sure that the surfaces are beautiful, easy to maintain and work beautifully with the rest of the kitchen and home.
We also have natural protective treatments for stone and marble which make maintenance easier.
